I searched for the wikipedia.org article and it says “Polyester is the most widely used manufactured fiber in the United States. Woven polyester fabrics are used for apparel and home furnishings. These include bed sheets, bedspreads, curtains and draperies. Polyester fiberfill is also used to stuff pillows, comforters and cushion padding.”
How often is polyester worn on the street?

Polyester is very common, especially in the sports athletic wear category. Recent technical innovations have turned polyester from the black sheep of the fabric world into a star. Polyesters made for athletic wear are superior in every way to cotton. When cotton gets wet with sweat it stays wet and heavy, polyester will wick perspiration away from the skin where it can evaporate and keep the athlete cooler. Polyester also washes clean as the fibers don’t absorb the sweat the same way cotton does.
In fashion textile polyester in no longer that thick ugly double knit. Polyester filaments are extruded finer than ever and spun into very fine threads and yarns -in micro deniers these yarns do not have that old fashioned plastic fantastic feel anymore. These new fibers can be blended with cotton to make cotton shrink less and add shape retention to cotton knits. When blended with wool the wool can become machine washable and un-shrinkable and it makes wool a far more durable fabric. Mixed with other synthetics polyester can make a variety of fabric weights and finishes, from fine chiffons to heavy tweeds and everything in between.
100% polyester fabric can also be in many weights and fabrics. There can be knits for t’s heavy double knits that make durable, washable clothing for work wear. It can be woven into fashion fabrics such as satins, crepes, gabardines, chiffons, organzas, piques and whatever else the fabric maker can dream up. It also makes up most structural elements of fashion garments, the parts no one sees such as thread, zipper tapes, construction tapes, seam tapes, interfacings, linings, interlinings and insulation layers for warmth in outerwear. Polyester can be given chemical and heat finishes to make it water resistant and wind resistant.
Polyester is a very common garment fiber and worn by people in all walks of life, from rich to poor. In my experience polyester would be the second most popular garment fiber after cotton.
Very common, most of the men & women’s suits are made from a polyester blend (usually with cotton or silk). Very durable, and soft material.
