Not scientific but Puma is of the genus Felidae which includes the Cougar and Mountain lion (panther) . Regionally speaking, in the US southwest (at least in Arizona) we call them Mountain lions. In other parts of the southwest I have heard them called Cougars. In parts of the US south they are called Panther.
