you gotta take all the padding out which is kind of a pain. use electrical tape if you want a solid color. if you want to change the color but still be able to see the carbon pattern use a paint pen (get it at any craft store) and only a thin layer of paint. be careful not to break any of the foam and you might have to use a little hot glue when you put the foam padding back in.
